Green Netherlands in 2026: protection, development and a responsible future

The Netherlands is at a turning point. Climate change, the transition to renewable energy sources and the modernisation of agriculture call for conscious choices. This overview shows you where our country stands today and which direction we can take together.

Global warming and the importance of awareness

The world is changing faster than ever. Recent measurements from the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) show that the average temperature in the Netherlands in 2025 was more than 1.9 °C higher than in the pre-industrial period. Melting polar ice, longer dry spells and heavier rainfall are no longer a distant prospect; they are part of our daily reality. For a low-lying country like the Netherlands, this means a double task: reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting our living environment from rising sea levels. The protection of nature, biodiversity and drinking water starts with awareness. Every resident can contribute to a cleaner Netherlands, whether by installing solar panels on the roof, riding an electric bike or simply using the car less often. The choices we make today determine the world our children will inherit.

The role of the Netherlands in renewable energy

The Netherlands is among Europe's frontrunners in renewable energy. According to the most recent figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS), more than 48 percent of electricity was generated sustainably in 2025. Dutch energy companies, knowledge institutions and municipalities are working together on large-scale solar parks in Flevoland and Groningen, and on offshore wind farms in the North Sea. The Climate Act stipulates that the country must have reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 55 percent by 2030 compared to 1990. Development of hydrogen technology, smart electricity grids and neighbourhood batteries is accelerating this transition. Future-oriented policy measures, such as training and public education, ensure that society as a whole can keep up with this change.

“The protection of nature is not a luxury — it is the foundation on which our future well-being rests.”

The future of agriculture: Agriculture 5.0

Dutch agriculture is known for its efficiency and innovation. The next step is called 'Agriculture 5.0': a combination of precision technology, artificial intelligence and regenerative cultivation. Soil sensors measure exactly when a crop needs water or nutrients, while drones recognise weeds without the need for chemicals. Vertical urban farming in Rotterdam and The Hague shows that fresh vegetables can also be grown in the heart of the city — using less land and less transport. The protection of the soil, the restoration of soil life and the return of flowering field margins together form the foundation for a resilient food supply. In this way, we are building a strong and green Netherlands for the generations of tomorrow.
